My project explores the makings of a dual language immersion first-grade class hosted at Lakewood Elementary. This unique curriculum is made possible by strong community efforts and intentional inclusivity measures by the Lakewood community. The Spanish program reflects the multilingual culture of Durham and the makeup of the community's Spanish speakers. Language is being used as a tool to unite people from all backgrounds, and immersing young students in a different language is proven to help students excel in all subject areas through critical thinking skills. The curriculum in this class is led by Ms. Duarte who excels in engaging her students through academic games, music, and verbal practice. The lessons and skills learned in this class will not only help students in their professional lives later on, but they will also have gained empathy and diverse cultural understanding through language immersion.
This project would not be possible without the kindness of Ms. Duarte and her class who welcomed me into their community. I dedicate this project to all the educators who have helped multilingual students like myself. Language should never be a barrier. Rather, it is a bridge towards stronger communities and better futures for all.
